The combination training STCW Basic Safety Training + Security Awareness is a four and a half training that is intended for employees who are going to work in shipping. Everyone who works or wants to work on board a seagoing ship must be in possession of a Basic Safety Training certificate. During this training, seafarers learn the basic safety skills they need to board a seafaring ship. The Security Awareness training is intended for all seafarers who are not directly charged with security duties according to the ship security plan (designated security duties). During this training, participants are taught how to respond to a safety risk. Consider reporting a security incident such as piracy, armed robbery or attack.
This course is certified by the Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate (ILT) under institute code NL021.

The training consists of the modules Personal Survival Techniques, Elementary First Aid, Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities and Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting. The following topics are covered in theory:
- survival techniques;
- fire safety and fire fighting;
- first aid;
- work safely;
- social responsibilities.
In addition, the following practical components are provided in this Basic Safety Training:
- exercise with personal and group rescue equipment;
- maintenance of safety equipment;
- firefighting exercises with firefighting equipment / compressed air and the use of the required extinguishing agents;
- drills related to emergency procedures;
- first aid and resuscitation.
- meaning and consequences of different safety levels;
- knowledge of the Ship Security Plan, procedures and precautionary measures;
- observing and recognizing safety risks;
- techniques used to circumvent security measures.
Class times:
On the first day, participants are expected to register at 7:45 am. The other training days start at 8.30 a.m. The first 4 training days will end around 4 p.m., the last training day at 12 p.m.
Language:
The training is given in English as a standard. On request, the training for groups can be organized in a different language. It is possible to hire an interpreter via STC-KNRM.

- Medical examination
The additional options can be selected in step 3 of the booking form.
Admission Requirements:
To participate in this training you will need a medical examination performed by a NOGEPA certified doctor. STC-KNRM can arrange this inspection for you. It is also possible to hand over a statement from a doctor showing that you are physically able to participate in the training.
Particulars:
This course has a five-year repeat obligation for the components that are difficult or impossible to train on board. The Basic Safety Refresher course and the Basic Safety Training refresher / Advanced Fire Fighting refresher course are also offered by STC-KNRM.
